Chevrolet 3.0 Duramax: The Versatile Chevy Diesel Engine You Should Know About

Overview

At a time when biggies of the auto industry are shying away from diesel tech, Chevrolet believes that it still has a lot of potential, especially for mid-size and full-size trucks and SUVs. Even the market sentiment in these segments is inclined towards diesel tech, which is visible in a significant preference for diesel variants.

Keeping up with this sentiment, Chevrolet updated the Duramax 3.0 diesel, one of its “bread-and-butter” engines, which is already available in the 2024 Silverado and will soon become the heart of the 2025 iterations of the Tahoe and Suburban SUVs.

One of the most advanced inline-six diesel engines in recent times, the 3.0 Duramax from Chevrolet, has seen a generational leap from LM2 to LZ0. Some minor and major tweaks have been introduced in the Duramax inline-six diesel engine in this transition, impacting all of its parameters, all of which are discussed here.

  • In its updated Lz0 version, the Duramax 3.0 diesel engine claims 305 hp and 495 lb-ft.
  • The Duramax inline-six diesel engine is currently available in popular Chevrolets like Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban.

History Of Chevrolet 3.0 Duramax Engine

The development of the Chevrolet 3.0 Duramax was a collaboration between the German brand Opel and General Motors, its parent brand from 1929 to 2017. The first-generation LM2 Duramax inline-six diesel engine came out towards the end of 2017, with light-duty trucks from Chevrolet and GMC being the first receivers of this engine. At its launch, the 3.0 Duramax LM2 was the most-advanced diesel engine to have ever come from General Motors.

Even after Opel’s takeover by Stellantis, General Motors continued using the LM2 Duramax 3.0 diesel engine as a powertrain for its mid-size trucks and full-size SUVs. However, in 2023, General Motors previewed the heavily re-engineered version of this engine, which is now called LZ0 instead of LM2. With revised internals, this 3.0-liter inline-six diesel engine now produces higher power and torque outputs than its predecessor, the LM2 Duramax.

Which Chevrolet Vehicles Get The Inline-Six Duramax Diesel Engine?

Currently, Chevrolet has three vehicles in its portfolio that are available with the 3.0 Duramax as one of their powertrain choices, all of which are as follows:

  • Chevrolet Tahoe – The 2024 Tahoe is available with the LM2 Duramax 3.0 in its LS, LT, RST, Premier, and High Country variants.
  • Chevrolet Suburban – The flagship luxury SUV from Chevrolet, the 2024 Suburban, also has LM2 Duramax 3.0 as one of its engine options in its LS, LT, RST, Premier, and High Country variants.
  • Chevrolet Silverado 1500 – The 2024 Silverado 1500 was the first Chevy vehicle to get the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine in its Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, ZR2, and High Country variants.

It should be noted that the 2025 Tahoe and 2025 Suburban are confirmed to get the new-generation LZ0 Duramax engine, which will replace the now-aging LM2 Duramax engine.

Chevy 3.0 Duramax Engine Design

Designed and developed by General Motors’ Global Propulsion Systems in Turin, the Duramax 3.0 diesel engine is assembled at its engine manufacturing facility, Flint Engine Operations, in Michigan. This inline-six diesel engine of Chevrolet uses a lightweight cast aluminum alloy for its block and cylinder head, which helped engineers reduce the weight of this engine.

The Chevrolet Duramax diesel engine has iron cylinder liners, silicon and aluminum alloy pistons, and crankshafts and connecting rods made of forged steel, enhancing its durability. With its timing components placed in its rear section, the Duramax 3.0 engine uses a wet belt for driving its oil pump and timing chains for the high-pressure fuel pump and camshafts.

Further technical advancements of the Duramax 3.0 diesel engine from Chevrolet include seven nodular iron main bearing caps to withstand high combustion pressures. Made of aluminum, the lower crankcase extension improves its strength and refinement. Its deep skirt block design, in which the casting of the engine block extends to the crankshaft centerline, also enhances its durability and refinement.

Duramax Inline-Six Diesel Performance: Power, Torque, Fuel-Efficiency, And Towing Capacity

The previous-generation LM2 Duramax 3.0 diesel engine, still available in the 2024 iterations of Chevrolet SUVs, Tahoe, and Suburban, claims 277 hp and 460 lb-ft. On the other hand, the new-generation LZ0 Duramax diesel engine, already available in the 2024 Silverado 1500 and set to come in the 2025 Tahoe and 2025 Suburban, claims 305 hp and 495 lb-ft.

In these Chevrolet vehicles, the Duramax 3.0 diesel engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission as the standard gearbox. Following are the fuel efficiency and towing capacities of the Chevrolet vehicles with the Duramax 3.0 engine:

VehicleVersion of Duramax 3.0Fuel efficiency (combined)Towing capacity

Improvements In Chevrolet 3.0 Duramax For 2025: New Code, Reliability And More

In 2023, Chevrolet introduced the upgraded version of the inline-six Duramax diesel engine with a few internal changes. With these changes, the codename of the engine too changed from LM2 to LZ0. The basic design of the Duramax LZ0 is more or less the same as the Duramax LM2. However, it boasts a few changes and add-ons, with the biggest highlight being the switch to steel pistons from cast aluminum alloy pistons. Other revisions introduced in the LZ0 include a redesigned combustion chamber, a re-tuned turbocharger, an improved cooling system, a more durable oil belt, and updated fuel injectors.

Besides enhancing the overall performance and fuel efficiency, these changes introduced for the LZ0 Duramax over the LM2 Duramax also improved the overall reliability and long-term durability. A few reports claim that the Duramax 3.0 diesel engine can run trouble-free for up to 500,000 miles if maintained regularly.
