2024 Chevrolet Traverse Reliability: How the Third-Gen Traverse will Fare in the Long Run?

  • The third-generation Chevrolet Traverse has a rating of 88 out of 100 on the quality and reliability index by J.D. Power.
  • The new Traverse is the first Chevy to get the LK0 engine, which is based on L3B, one of the most reliable modern-day turbocharged engines.
  • Chevrolet offers powertrain and roadside warranties of 60 months/60,000 miles for the new Traverse

Chevrolet introduced the all-new third-generation Traverse in 2024, and needless to say, it has a lot on its shoulders. Compared to its previous versions, the new Traverse claims a host of improvements. It has become more SUV-like with squared-off shoulders, more premium with several new-age features and screens, and more spacious than ever before. Even its performance and driving dynamics have been enhanced with the revisions under the skin, including a new engine and a new platform.

But with all the changes, has the reliability of the Chevrolet Traverse improved too? The new third-generation Chevrolet Traverse competes in one of the most hotly-contested categories of vehicles – mid-size three-row SUVs. Primarily considered by family-oriented buyers, reliability and practicality are the prime fortes in the minds of people considering such SUVs. We took a preliminary study of the reliability of the Chevrolet Traverse, and here are our insights:

Reliability Ratings: What Does J.D. Power Say About Third-Gen Traverse?

For many, discussing an SUV’s reliability within a year of its launch might be too early to say. However, one of the most renowned entities for examining a car’s reliability, J.D. Power, has already come up with some projections.

  • The third-generation Chevrolet Traverse has secured a rating of 88 out of 100 on the quality and reliability index.
  • This rating is decided on factors like early projections of defects and malfunctions, long-term dependability and customer satisfaction feedback to date.
  • As per J.D. Power ratings, this is considered to be great, if not outstanding, which means that the new Traverse will fare great in long-term reliability with minimal problems.

Reasons That Make Traverse A Modern Reliable Chevy

New-Generation Engine

The new third-generation Traverse is the first Chevy to get the LK0 turbocharged gasoline engine, a slightly downsized version of the popular L3B engine found in other Chevrolet vehicles like the Colorado, Silverado, and Tahoe.

  • Over the L3B, the new-generation 2.5-liter LK0 engine gets Intake Valve Lift Control for improved fuel economy.
  • Like the L3B, this new smaller engine also has active fuel management, variable valve timing, and a start-stop system.
  • The L3B engine has already developed a good reputation for reliability in Chevy trucks like the Colorado and Silverado. And if that’s anything to go by, this new smaller all-aluminum LK0 engine based on it should follow the path and offer equally good or even better reliability.

Advanced VSS-S Platform

The new third-generation Traverse sits on the new VSS-S platform, one of the latest versions of General Motors’ new-generation Vehicle Set Strategy (VSS) platform family.

  • Engineered for all kinds of vehicles, from compact to full-size vehicles, the VSS-S platform accommodates both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations.
  • The new VSS-S platform shares many components with the other three versions of the VSS series of platforms, making it versatile and maintenance-friendly in the long run.

Proven Electronics

Besides a comprehensive suite of ADAS features offered as standard, the new-generation Chevrolet Traverse features Super Cruise, General Motors’ hands-free driver assist system in its higher-spec RS trim.

These features and some more mean that the Traverse has a significant dependency on electronics, like many other modern SUVs. However, Chevrolet has fine-tuned all of these features, particularly Super Cruise, in other new-age vehicles in recent years, making these systems more foolproof in the new Traverse.

What Does The Future Hold For Chevrolet Traverse Third-Generation?

Chevrolet offers a decent limited coverage warranty of 36 months/36,000 miles for powertrain. In addition, it also gets powertrain and roadside warranties of 60 months/60,000 miles for the new Traverse, which are also decent as per industry norms. However, for a more insightful projection, CarEdge surveyed the new Traverse and came up with the following results:

  • The new third-generation Chevrolet Traverse can hold 36-42 percent of its initial value after five years of usage, bringing it on par with other popular SUVs in the market.
  • The study also shows that the cost of maintenance and repairs for Chevrolet Traverse in the first five years will range between $2,800-$2,900. These figures are lower than the current industry average for similar SUVs, making it an SUV that is easier and more economical to maintain.
  • It also shows a minuscule 5 percent chance that the third-gen Traverse might require a major repair in the first five years of its usage. It is also a significant 26 percent better than similar SUVs in its category.

How long do Chevy Traverse engines last?

The new-generation Chevrolet Traverse has a capable 2.5-liter LK0 engine, which is based on the reliable and popular 2.7-liter L3B turbocharged gasoline engine. This new engine is expected to last a high number of miles and can run hassle-free even longer, provided it is maintained regularly.

What is the lifespan of Chevy Traverse?

The new Chevrolet Traverse has rugged underpinnings thanks to the General Motors’ next-generation VSS-S platform—one of four advanced architectures from their Vehicle Set Strategy (VSS). So, it is capable of lasting 15 years, or even more, without breaking a sweat.

What is the reliability score of the 2024 Chevy Traverse?

According to J.D. Power, the new third-generation Chevrolet Traverse has a rating of 88 out of 100 in quality and reliability index, making it a great SUV to own in the long run. This preliminary rating depends on the possibilities of defects and malfunctions and customer feedback.

What is the safety rating of the 2024 Chevy Traverse?

The third-generation Chevrolet Traverse hasn’t been tested for safety rating yet. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the new Traverse an overall evaluation of “good” for the previous-generation model. So, the new Traverse is expected to be even better.

Is GM discontinuing the Traverse?

Chevrolet has no plans to discontinue the Traverse, as evident with the launch of the new third-generation model in 2024. It is expected that a full-electric version of the new Traverse might join the lineup in the near future.
